not exactly what I had in mind...

I had grandiose visions of this year's trip to the pumpkin patch. I had been looking forward to it for at least three weeks! With several recommendations of a cute place to go, we took off on Saturday and headed for the Bates Nut Farm nestled in the hills of Escondido.

The anticipation built as we got closer and closer. Finally we approached the pumpkin patch. Almost in an instant, my dreams of family fall festivities had been crushed when I saw a sea of at least 600 cars in a dirt parking lot. Did we get the wrong place? Because it looked like we were at the county fair, or a Disneyland attraction. Masses of people were swarming the place. Food vendors, hired petting zoos, climbing walls, and jump houses dotted the vast grounds.

Many of you are probably reading this and thinking...yeah...so what? Well, you must not understand the picture of a pumpkin patch I had painted in my head.

As Troy was trying to understand my disappointment, he asked...."What exactly did you have pictured? You, me and Jack sitting atop hay bails on a vintage tractor sipping hot cider on a brisk fall day as we look over rolling hills of pumpkins still attached to the vine?"

"Well, yes!" I replied. "That...AND caramel apples, an authentic barnyard of animals, fall trees, scarves and jackets, and CUTE pictures!" (Please refer to the Cannon's blog for my vision in pictures)

So, here is our day at the pumpkin patch. Not what I had envisioned, but still a fun day as a family!

Jack trying to get a taste of the pumpkin.

Jack thought the pumpkins made a fun climbing obstacle course. In, out, up and over, but never looking at the camera!

I guess we'll have to come back next year to put baby girl in that last spot.

This little man LOVED the animals. His version of petting the animals was a few swift swats to the head.

His mouth was wide open with wonderment 90% of the time. He also thought the alfalfa pellets were for him...he snuck a few in.

I love his sheepish expression in this photo. It's almost as if he just introduced himself to the goat, then got nervous and embarrassed.

Ali, your description of the pumpkin patch is probably what every Mom wants (especially with little toddlers). Just like you, I wanted the air to be cool with a slight wind so my beautiful scarf would slightly blow in the wind. However, when we went to our local pumpkin patch the wind was blowing about 25 miles and hour, the pumpkins had already been picked (of course) and were in huge cardboard buckets in an old rickety barn that was already chock full of old broken farm machinery, and they had two sad little "token" goats chained up. It wasn't exactly what I was picturing but I'm sure the kids (or Dads) don't care -- it's just the crazy, perfectionist moms.

The picture of Jack and the goat is hilarious!!!! All the pics with the pumpkins are so cute. I'm sorry the patch wasn't how you imagined - but your family made the most of it! If you're ever in my are - I'll give you directions to an old timey patch - with rusted tractors, cider, hay bales, and rope swings.

Ali--I don't think there really is the perfect pumpkin patch. unless of course you live in Oregon.

Ya, i kinda got a taste of that when I lived in the bay area. A billion people EVERYWHERE...isnt that what California is all about? You gotta come to Wyoming for that kinda dreamin'!
What an adorable little Jack...priceless photos. This age looks like its a blast, and a lot of work. Cant wait till Bodi is this age.

Ali If Troy had time off you would have gotten your picture prefect pumpkin patch here. Saturday brings out a lot of people but they have a corn maze and hay ride complete with old houses to walk through, and smelly farm animals. Even though it wasn't what you envisioned those pictures are great! Jack is so funny!

what's amazing is that even with out the neat background you still manage to capture some beautiful pictures.

Is it just my point and shoot that is the problem?

Please tell me you're using the head-through-the-holes-pic for your Christmas cards. You can photoshop your ultrasound pic into the empty space.

I love that picture with Jack and the goat. We should go to the small patch off of Scott Rd. again if this air ever clears!

When Mindy and I are bored we look at that sheepish grin on Jacks face and LAUGH OUR HEADS OFF. That is the funniest smile I have ever seen.
