sorry about your sasquatch genes...

Dear Lucy,

30 years ago your grandma was expecting her first baby girl.  A reason to celebrate, right?  Well not exactly.  She was very concerned.  Terrified with the probable chance that her first baby girl would be....well...a SASQUATCH to put it lightly.  With her height measuring in at 5 foot 11 inches and your grandpa's height at 6 foot 5, all that came to mind was something like this....

She prayed and hoped that her new daughter would be "normal".  They named her Ali.  They watched her grow...and grow she did!  They took her to to church dances and winced as she awkwardly danced with boys half her size.  They listened to her highschool friends affectionately call her "big Al".  They sympathized with her when even the Gap LONG jeans were still too short.

That girl, Ali, grew to be 5 foot 10 inches.  But her parents counted themselves lucky because their other 3 children were all taller than 6'3" with the tallest one at 6'9". (luckily all boys)

That girl is now your mom.  And I have all the same concerns for you.  Now don't get me wrong, Lu.  Being tall has it's benefits.  Like you can easily find people in a crowd.  Or you can help your short friends pull something from a high shelf.  Or you can get scholarships for volleyball or basketball (then again...you'd have to have coordination from your dad for that one) But is there such thing as too tall?

The doctor tells us today that you are in the 95th percentile for height.  You're doing good!  Your brother on the other hand is estimated to be in the 125th percentile for both height and weight!  Sheesh!

I want you to know that being tall is fantastic.  And as your mom, I will love you whether you're 3 feet tall or 9 feet tall.  But is it okay that I'm secretly keeping my fingers crossed for less than 7?

I love you.

All my love,
mom

Ali - it's so cute to read your worries. I felt tall at 5'7" - my first daughter Cadence is tall. She gets it from both sides. . . scary! She has been in the 95th percentile since birth - and still going strong. You know how they say you can take their height at two and double it and it gives you an idea how tall they'll be - 6'4". She towers over all the girls in dance, nursery - everywhere. She's beautiful. I just didn't think I'd ever have girls that tall - and it will be fun to keep watching her grow and grow. (I just hope she stops before 6'4":D)

You are so cute and so is Lucy. I don't remember thinking that you were so tall? I realize that it was a while ago that I met you, but I am only 5'1" and I just remember thinking that you were perfect. Lucy will be as well.

That is TOO Cute! It's funny, because I have always had the same fears...for my boys...that they might inherit my "short person" genes. I am the tallest woman in my family at 5'4". My sisters, mother, and grandmother are all 4'11"-5'1" and my Dad is 5'6"! What's also funny is that Chloe is my tallest child (for her age and development) so I think her and Lucy can hang out and play some competitive Basketball together in a few years-LOL!

On a side note... we are always telling Chloe how lucky she is that she'll be tall and pretty like her Auntie Ali...and she LOVES it! She really looks up (pardon the pun) to you and can't wait to be as tall as you :)

Let's get Lu and Jules together. They can even out the scale. He's 17th % for height and a big chub. A short fatty. Plus, we'd be great mother's-in-law for each others' kids!

Being a tall girl is great!!. At first I didn't like it but now I do. Now I just have to find a guy taller than me but that seems to be a problem at Byu-Idaho. There are a ton of shrimps here!

My sisters kids are also going to be super tall. Last week she just had a little boy and he was almost 21inches long. Both her little girls are super tall too.

I am sure Lucy is going to be tall and beautiful just like her mommy!

At least Jack is up there too! Kara is in the 95th percentile for height but my boys are both under the 50th percentile for their height! Who's going to protect who in highschool?

Although there might be some awkward situations for really tall girls in high school, no matter who you are, there will ALWAYS be awkward times in high school so it might as well be about your height. Trust me, at a lowly 5'3", I would love to be taller.

Luckily, now you have all the wisdom in the world to tell adorable little Lucy that one day, one day not too far off, girls will be jealous (I know that because at 30, I'm still jealous of my three 5'7" and 5'10" friends).
